Halfway Home

I've done my fair share of living
Never been afraid of the road
I've done a whole lot of sinning
and I'm already halfway home

Racked my mind in the mountains
trying to write a song
with a purpose in my heart
and a hatchet in my hands
And I'm already halfway home

I cut a trail from here to Denver
chopping down every tune I know
I'm on a blue collar bender
and I'm already halfway home

I don't ramble like I used to
I know where I'm headed when I hit the road
If it's a gamble I may lose you
Then I'm already halfway home

Postcard from New Orleans

Full of gator boudin
Fueled by ketel one
searching for j. reilly
new orleans native son
i came here from the ozarks
through the river valley flats
on the southern breeze
past cypress trees
to where the people say who dat

decatur darlins bummin smokes
a man gave me a book he just wrote
crawfish boys and girls show them tails
please save me from the parish jail

the next three days go missing
drown in a bourbon haze
those frenchmen down on frenchmen
sure know how to play
next thing i remember knowing
i was singing rupert holmes
wheeling away the hours of the day
on a bike with the tires blown

catfish po boy spilled down my thighs
as fleur-de-lis fill up my eyes
crawfish boys and girls show them tails
please save me from the parish jail

so if you see ignatious
tell him i'll be coming back
to take my place forever
on the stoop of the treme flat
where jolly will be my spirit
and folly will be my guide
big cheif will be my companion
and sin will be my bride

set me to boil in this cajun dream
as i pole my pirogue on downstream
crawfish boys and girls show them tails
please save me from the parrish jail

Canary in a Coal Mine

Old man pkipsey turned the light on
a little bit too late
Never even saw it coming
I wonder When he departed did he feel pain
or bid farewell to his widowed woman

A handle of whiskey and a shotgun
A little leap of faith
Baby you could hit the ground runnin'
As for me and mine
it's best to keep those thoughts in line
Don't give them a reason to come out gunnin'

Canary in a coal mine
Stone cold patsy on the rail
Now his tombstone is a road sign
Took one in the marble
o'er a two dollar bill

The moon seems to hide behind desire
this side of town
Past midnight back rooms best left alone
But that old man
he was a gambler to the core
Emptied his pockets long before
he made it home
Emptied his pockets long before
he made it home

Love is a Dangerous Game

She's got a ten mile stare
Cool and collected
from her toes to her hair
Well she's got a ten mile stare
and her smile is less of a grin
and more of a dare

Cause love is a dangerous game
and there's just enough cards for two
Girl you ain't even anted up yet
and I'm already all in on you
We've been playing forever now
isn't it time for us to push on through
Cause love is a dangerous game
and there's room at the table
for me and you

She's got a ten mile stare
Girl is ruthless from her toes to her hair
Leave the dealer alone
see he ain't the reason this game's unfair
Fire in her eyes and flowers in her hair

She's got a couple of tells
I've never seen before
And I'm telling myself I got a hand
that can even the score
Digging my grave with a spade
while she's hiding an ace up her sleeve
As she calls my bluff I wonder how it is
I could be so naive

PARKS CLOSED

this one life is all I've got
so I'm doing the best I can
To soak it in and live it up
try to be a better man
Don't forget to remind myself
day after day
Tomorrow is a promise
and some promises will break
So I treasure all the fun I've had
and the memories I've made
Now there's a gold mine lost inside my head
as my recollections fade

Because my good times
they seem a little blurry
Drinkin' till I'm fallin' down
and the room is spinnin' around and around
The more fun that I have more I can see
My good times got a bad memory

Do you remember that one night
we had in Eureka Springs
I don't really either dear
but I'm sure there are some things
That you could say to me
and maybe I suppose
I might recall the tall old man
who came to say "parks closed"
I heard somebody say it best
but what it is I don't recall
I guess that's just the price you pay
for going balls to the wall
Just when I thought that I had found
a moment of clarity
The puzzle pieces fell apart
now its not so plain to see

Because my good times
they seem a little hazy
A fifth of this an eighth of that
fluff the head that's under my hat
The more fun that I have more I can see
My good times got a bad memory

Well I might be the type
to someday settle down
When hell freezes over
and I've made all my rounds
We can find a place
and get away from it all
and only come out to the farm
in the Ozarks in the fall

If I Were You

You do more for me than I do for myself
You take your time loving me so well
Love of mine it seems to me
you don't float my boat
you're the whole damn sea

And if this ship sinks I'll be right at home
Swimming with the fish
and a long time gone
Little love of mine it seems to me
you don't float my boat
you're the whole damn sea

Would I believe in me if I were you
Now that we've stayed I lie awake
wondering what to do
There's only so many things in this world
that a man can prove
Most of which you only get one chance at
and I've already had two

The clock say's it's way past three
and we've lost our faith in me
We've lost our faith in me
We've lost our faith in me

Lovers quarrel all through the night
The whole ship goes down
if the crew don't right it
Broken dishes and choppy seas
Throw a little more of that love at me

And if this ship sinks I'll be right at home
Swimming with the fish and a long time gone
Little love of mine it seems to me
you don't float my boat
you're the whole damn sea

state sublime

searching for something
to fill me up inside
started suckin on that bottle
puffin green to get me high
but when i would awake
from my debauched state
i was empty as can be
i felt farther away than yesterday
from the person that i wanted to be

as i looked a folks around me
i noticed everybody's smile
i put on mine too and stand next to you
get along in the rank and file
searching for a way
to change my state of mind
i've just been trying all my life
to reach a state sublime

a pile of powder and a hanful of pills
was the next thing i did try
i felt ten feet tall
and could bust through walls
never thoughtin i would die
but those pills they left my body
and they left something behind
a mix of jitters and shivers
and a head full of doubt
and an attitude unkind

pieces of paper and fungus trees
bought from a man with no guarantees
i see all kinds of things gonna blow my mind
leaving the planet far behind
strange and weird as my vision becomes blurry
is there anybody else here seeing crab turkeys

i spent years of my life
looking for a good vice
and i think that i tried them all
but not one of those things ever gave me wings
they all left me feeling small
until one day a girl she came my way
and she filled me up with love
and i knew right then this had always been
the feeling that i was thinking of

Man of the Cloth

He was a man of the cloth
Took them all for a ride
They believed he had a message
from up on high

The old soothsayer
a deceiver indeed
And according to my momma
he was preaching on me

Now every corner that I turn
it's milk and honey for free
The common swindler's trick
he was preaching on me

Now it's a common swindler's trick
channeling the words of god
Laying lies upon their shoulders
with their knees in the sod
After all of my time here
there's only two things I believe
Sheep always think they need a shepherd
and money's still green

Everybody Dies

I'm afraid to pick a rope
but I believe that I've found the tree
In my desk there's something i wrote
Give that to the family
By the time they read it I'll be swinging as low as the chariot that carries me
To the only place I reckon I belong
Hell's infirmary

Everybody dies
How's it gonna be when you go
Live fast die young leave a sexy corpse
creep along grow old die slow
Everybody dies
How's it gonna be when you go
When I make my break for the other side everybody here's gonna know

Such a long way to go
Such a short amount of time
Ain't no rain wind or snow
make no difference on that ride
Cherry wood velvet and satin
flowers for the dead
All the little things that need to happen
for us to get it through our heads

And I'll step over that threshold
with more pressing business
than cumbersome clothes
More than life or limb for that matter
when god's the mad hatter
and I'm running down the rabbit hole
Everybody dies
Yes and wouldn't you like to know
if there's an exception that idea's conception is as worthless as it is old

Ride Ride Ride

Well I wish the earth would shake
like it did in days of old
turn that mighty river round
and carry us back home
But if the ground beneath our feet
stays firm and the river true
no frets my dear when the debts are clear we'll ride me and you

And we will ride ride ride
back home again
Up the old river valley
away from all this sin
Let the cheap libations
and sweet celebration begin
We will ride ride ride
back to where we began

Two tickets on the greyhound
two tickets on the train
Two tickets on the steamboat
or steam powered aeroplane
Many many miles
between us and home again
Another dusk another dawn
another road with my best friend

I live for these nights
cause I'll die one of these days
And I refuse to regret
the work I've done for little pay
I'd be proud to die with you
hand in hand under the shade
Sharing laughter tears and tales
over all the love we've made
